Dear Agoura Hills Residents:
The construction phase of the U.S. 101/Kanan Road Interchange Project has been completed, and now the project is in the Operational Adjustment Phase (O.A.P.) during which the physical improvements that were made are field-tested, reviewed, and improved.
As I previously communicated to you, this project is a joint plan with the City and Caltrans, who by law, has jurisdiction over signals and traffic flow within 100-feet of bridges and ramps connecting to a state highway. Therefore, the City must work within the limits allowed by the state agency.
The City's engineering firm, Kimley-Horn and Associates, who specializes in traffic analysis in conjunction with the project's construction management team, will continue to monitor the traffic flow on Kanan Road, and will be making suggestions for design improvements that the City can then propose to Caltrans.
So far, those suggestions include enhancements to improve:
- Southbound traffic flow on Kanan Road during peak hours and access onto the U.S. 101 north and southbound on-ramps
Analysis is being completed to determine if dual lane access onto the on-ramps are feasible. We are also looking into converting the right turn only lane onto Canwood Street, into a straight and right turn lane.
- Northbound on Kanan Road at Roadside Drive
Analysis is currently underway evaluating if it is possible to stripe in a dedicated right turn only lane to improve this intersection.
- Signage for driver notification of the correct lane configurations
Additional signage on Kanan has been ordered, outside the Caltrans project area, that will serve as advanced notification to drivers unfamiliar with the lane configurations, on both the north and south sides of the interchange.
- Vehicular flow from northbound Kanan Road onto the U.S. 101 northbound loop on-ramp
Analysis is currently underway to request a green right turn arrow to this on-ramp to allow for a continuous traffic flow.
These suggested changes (and maybe others) will be proposed to Caltrans for approval. We are confident that the state will work with us in helping to preserve the quality of life that currently exists in Agoura Hills. As we move forward on the project, the City will continue to provide timely updates.
Cordially,
Nathan Hamburger

NIGHT TIME WORK TO TAKE PLACE ON
KANAN ROAD STARTING AUGUST 21, 2006
Please note that starting Monday August 21, 2006 work along Kanan Road from Roadside Drive to Agoura Road in conjunction with the US 101/Kanan Road Interchange Project will be conducted from 8 pm until 6 am. The construction work being done at night will require major portions of Kanan Road to be closed throughout the evening and may require the detouring of vehicles. The night time work is expected to last approximately 2 weeks (Monday through Friday only). This segment of the construction is being moved to the late evening and early morning to avoid major traffic delays during the daytime hours when the amount of vehicles in this area is larger.
Please use caution when driving through this area during this time frame. It is recommended that an alternate route be used if possible. If you need to use this area for travel, please allow extra time and be patient as traffic diversion and slower speeds are to be used in the construction areas. Additional updates for this project can be found at the City’s website at
www.ci.agoura-hills.ca.us, www.kananroad.org or by calling the Kanan Project Hotline (818) 597-7356. The City will frequently update the construction schedule to inform commuters and the community of upcoming road or lane closures and traffic diversions.

AGOURA HILLS TRAFFIC ADVISORY
WHAT
Kanan Road Interchange Project
• Lane Closures on Kanan Road (north of U.S. 101 freeway)
WHEN
Beginning Monday, October 24, 2005
Expected completion of Kanan Road utility construction is November 4, 2005.
WHY
Utility relocations in advance of the commencement of the US 101/Kanan Road Interchange Project.
Utilities need to be relocated in order to help speed the overall construction of the new interchange. The new interchange will improve the level of service by eliminating left hand turns onto the freeway, relocating traffic signals, and increasing the number of lanes in exit ramps.
For additional information call the project hotline at 818-597-7356.
