AGOURA HILLS ANNOUNCES $4 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR KANAN ROAD INTERCHANGE PROJECT

With the support of Congressman Henry Waxman (D-Los Angeles), the City of Agoura Hills has announced that it will receive $4 million in federal funds to support the much needed improvements for the Kanan Road Interchange project. The federal funds will enable the final phase of the project to begin. The highly anticipated funding was made available by recent congressional approval of the Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (TEA-LU).

"It has taken years of planning and hard work, and a few set backs, but we are now in a position to complete the interchange for our residents and area commuters," said Ed Corridori, mayor of Agoura Hills. "This long sought after funding means the city’s share of this $24 million regional project is now about 40% instead of 60%. Many thanks to Congressman Waxman who never wavered in his belief that this project deserved federal funding."

Mayor Corridori and other Agoura Hills city officials traveled to Washington D.C. last month to reinforce the importance of this funding. They met with key members of congress, and received the full endorsement and support from Congressman Henry Waxman. Additionally, the project was supported by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Senator Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.), Representative Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) and Congressman Elton Gallegly (R-Ventura).

The City is currently well underway on the early phases of the project. The realignment of Canwood Street has been completed and the utility relocations is nearing completion. Once constructed, the new interchange will immensely alleviate the congested roadway for commuters.

The reconstruction is scheduled to begin by the end of this year and will take one year to complete.  Top

Agoura Hills' $23 million
Kanan Interchange project is now underway!

The single largest capital improvement project ever to be undertaken by the City of Agoura Hills was initiated by the City Council in 1999. Since then, the city council has maintained the Kanan Road Interchange project as a top priority to improve quality of life through reduced City traffic congestion. To accomplish this, the city council set aside funds, and collected traffic improvement fees. Additionally, in 1999 they championed and secured a $10.5 million Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) grant to fund the construction. This MTA grant was a catalyst for the project to become a reality. The remaining $12.5 million needed for project completion will be provided by the City.

The interchange improvements will be accomplished in three phases and include:

Phase One: Near Completion Phase one work includes the relocation of Canwood Street (east of Kanan Road) that is nearing completion. This involved constructing a half-mile section of roadway from Kanan Road to Clareton Drive. The 64-foot roadway includes new pavement, storm drains, bridge widening, striping, signage, and a signal at Kanan Road. Additionally, 2 billboards were removed, and utilities were placed underground. The J.H. Snyder Company completed the roadway work as a requirement of their residential and commercial project, located just north of the newly aligned Canwood Street. The J.H. Snyder Company also dedicated the land for the newly aligned Canwood Street as well as land for the interchange improvements. The cost of "phase one" work is projected to be $8 million dollars.

Phase Two: Begins December 2004 through Summer 2005 Phase two work requires utilities to be relocated within the project limits. This is no small feat, as there are 11 different utility organizations that will be involved in this process. In December of 2004, the Agoura Hills City Council awarded a contract to relocate sewer and water utilities for the north side of the US 101 freeway. The utility relocation for the south side of the freeway will begin in early 2005. Utility relocation work will take approximately six months to complete.

Phase Three: Project Completion February 2006 The third and final phase of construction will take an estimated twelve months to complete and should be well underway by summer 2005. Phase three involves reconstruction of freeway ramps and signals, bridge widening, signage, striping, new on/off ramps, walls, irrigation, landscaping, and creating drainage structures.

Future Updates The City of Agoura Hills shares the excitement of the Kanan Road Interchange project with its residents and will be providing periodic updates throughout the construction project. The City will provide project updates on the website, http://www.ci.agoura-hills.ca.us/kananroad/
